The tower served as the administrative center for the municipality with the same name, Kršan, and became a small town. The castle was named Castrum Carsach for the first time in 1274 after the Count of Gorica Albert II's troops destroyed it. Kršan was ruled at the time by the Patriarch of Aquileia. Henry of Pazin-Pisino acquired a portion of Kršan in the early 14th century.
