The Benedictine monastery Sveti Petar u Šumi, first mentioned in historical sources in 1174 with an unknown notation of its 50 years of existence, was given that name. Unlike other Istrian communities, including Sveti Petar u Šumi, where a village with a church and monastery was erected on a hilltop with hillsides dotted with dwellings, there were no dwellings around the church of the sanctuary.
