The Benedictine monastery of Sveti Petar u Šumi is mentioned in historical records from 1174 with an unknown comment about its existence for 50 years. Unlike other Istrian communities, which erected a village on a hilltop with a church and its tower, Sveti Petar u Šumi lacked homes around both the church and the monastery.
